Review: The Artist ONE – EXODUS IV.3:
40 Years of Wandering (2015)
This is the third installment in The Artist ONE’s (Malachi Coggeshell) ambitious multi-part musical retelling of the Book of Exodus.
Released on April 4, 2015 (timed with the third Blood Moon in the 2014–2015 tetrad), it’s a concise 7-song project that shifts focus from the dramatic liberation events of prior parts to the wilderness years, the Israelites’ recurring unfaithfulness, and Moses’ personal struggles as their leader.
Concept & Themes
The album dives deep into the emotional and spiritual core of the Exodus narrative after the Red Sea crossing and the giving of the Law. It explores:
-
The Israelites’ quick forgetfulness of God’s miracles.
-
Moses’ heartbreak and sense of failure.
-
God’s perspective on His chosen but often rebellious people.
This makes it more introspective and relational than the epic, plague-and-liberation focus of EXODUS IV.1 and IV.2.
It humanizes the biblical story without losing reverence. N1N
Standout Tracks (as described by the artist + available info)
-
"SLAVES" — God’s perspective on His people. It carries a weighty, almost mournful tone that highlights divine disappointment mixed with enduring love. Solid groove and heartfelt delivery.

-
"WAIT FOR YOU" — Moses’ lament over his people turning away from God’s truth. This feels like the emotional centerpiece — vulnerable, frustrated, yet faithful. The official video and streaming versions emphasize the personal struggle.

-
"TEN" — A raw, one-take vocalization/recitation of the Ten Commandments. It’s bold and minimalist, letting the power of the words stand (mostly) on their own. A memorable, worshipful moment that fits the album’s biblical fidelity.

The remaining four tracks round out the wilderness wandering theme, maintaining the narrative flow. Musical Style:
The Artist ONE is a true one-man band who plays all real instruments (no drum machines or autotune). His sound blends:
-
Progressive rock
-
Christian rock/worship elements
-
Ambient and singer-songwriter intimacy
Expect layered guitars, thoughtful arrangements, and expressive vocals that prioritize storytelling over commercial polish. It’s not flashy radio rock — it’s earnest, creative, and devotional indie prog with a raw, personal edge.
Production is straightforward but effective for conveying the concept.

Strengths
-
Strong biblical integration — Lyrics draw directly from Scripture while adding emotional depth (Moses’ inner life, God’s viewpoint).
-
Conceptual cohesion — Even at just 7 songs, it feels like a complete chapter in the larger Exodus saga.
-
Authenticity — One-man passion project energy shines through. This is clearly made from conviction, not trends.
-
Timing & symbolism — The Blood Moon release adds a prophetic feel that fits the thematic weight.
Potential Drawbacks
-
Production and performance are very DIY, so it may not hit as hard sonically for listeners used to polished big-studio Christian rock or prog.
-
It’s niche: best appreciated by fans of concept albums, biblical retellings, and progressive/ambient rock rather than mainstream worship or metal.
Overall Verdict: 8.5/10 (Solid Indie Christian Prog)
EXODUS IV.3: 40 Years of Wandering is a thoughtful, heartfelt addition to The Artist ONE’s Exodus series. It succeeds most in capturing the human side of a familiar story — the frustration, the waiting, the repeated cycles of faithfulness and failure.
If you enjoy concept-driven Christian music (think Neal Morse Band vibes but more raw and solo), biblical storytelling albums, or progressive rock with a devotional heart, this is worth seeking out on Bandcamp, Spotify, or the artist’s site.
It’s not trying to be the next big crossover hit — it’s a sincere musical meditation on one of the Bible’s most dramatic (and relatable) seasons. In that, it wanders well. Check out the full series for the complete journey. Respect to Malachi for the dedication across multiple albums.
The operatic voice that made Slaves perfect.
She is the only person ever on and music I have done, hopefully, we can do it again soon.
EXODUS IV.3 40 YEARS OF WANDERING
1. 40 YEARS OF WANDERING
If you will hear my voice
My covenant with thee
On the wings of an Eagle, I will carry thee.
Children of the sand, to my promise land.
A kingdom of priest you shall be
A holy nation unto me
These are the words I promise thee
Israel is the light that shines.
A gleam in my eye,
Call the elders unto me
Before they faces lay the key
All that I command of thee
From the cloud, you will see
The writing of my own hand
Go now and sanctify them
Wash the clothes of all the sin
Set the bound of all of them
Not to touch the mountain where I stand
I AM THE I AM
2. SLAVES
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVES
430 YEARS HAVE GONE
STILL, THEY SEEM TO CARRY ON
THE WAYS THAT MADE THEM SLAVES
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVES
SENT MOSES TO FREE THE LAND TO TAKE THEM FROM PHARAOHS HAND
BUT THEY RUN RIGHT BACK AS SLAVES
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVE I BRING THEM FREEDOM THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND
THEY NEED LAWS TO COMPREHEND TO MAKE THEM BACK AS SLAVES
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVE
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVE
GOING BACK TO WHAT THEY’VE KNOWN
TO WORSHIP GODS WITHOUT A THRONE IN THE KINGDOM I HAVE MADE
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVE
UNKNOWING TO THE LOVE I GIVE
THE FREEDOM THAT COMES WITHIN
THE SOUL AND ETERNAL FLAME
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVES
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVES
THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LOVE I GIVE THE FEELING THAT COME WITHIN
TAKING HOLD OF THE NAME
MY PEOPLE ARE SLAVES
THE WORKS THAT I HAVE TO BECOME
MY SON THAT WILL COME FOR FREEDOM
AND THE LOVE THAT WILL ALWAYS BE
MY PEOPLE WILL BE FREE.
3.WAIT FOR YOU
I can’t understand
Why you do what you do
When your freedom is at hand
Why do they come to me
To help them see
Makes laws too tie their hands
You set them free
Why can't they see
The love your eternal plan
But they call to me
To set them free
Lead them to the promised land
The Lord has spoke to me (Falling from your Love)
To set his people free (Falling from)
Lord help me to control
This anger inside
It’s out of control
Just can’t see the love you have within
All the things you’ve done Freed them from slavery
It’s not sinking in, It’s not sinking in.
The Lord has spoke to me (Falling from your Love)
To set his children free (Falling from your love)
The Lord has spoke to me (Falling from your love)
To set his people free (Falling from your love)
How long, How long Will they be blinded
I will do for thee all that you have called of me.
4. IN MY MIND
IN MY MIND
I’M SEARCHING FOR
FOR ALL TIME
I’M LONGING
WHY DO WE CONSTANTLY RUN AWAY
WHY DO WE CONSTANTLY BETRAY
YOUR LOVE
IN MY MIND WHY DO I WHY DO I
5. TEN
I AM THE LORD THY GOD,
WHO BROUGHT THEE FROM THIS LAND,
FROM THE SHIFTING SAND
DELIVERER YOU..
1.. THOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GOD’s BEFORE ME
2..THOU SHALL NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE OR LIKENESS IN HEAVEN ON EARTH OR IN THE SEA
3.. THOU SHALL NOT BOW DOWN BEFORE THEM OR SERVE THEM FOR I AM WITH THEE,
I AM BUT A JEALOUS GOD AND MY LOVE IS ALL THAT YOU SEE.
4.. THOU SHALL NOT TAKE MY NAME IN VAIN FOR I WILL NOT HOLD YOU GUILTLESS FROM ME
5.. REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY AND KEEP IT HOLY
6.. HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER FOR YOUR DAYS SHALL BE LONG, LONGER WITH ME.
7.. THOU SHALL NOT KILL
8.. THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
9..THOU SHALL NOT STEAL NOR BARE FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THEE
10. THOU SHALL NOT COVET THEY, NEIGHBORS, THE THINGS YOU THINK THEY OWN, FOR MY LOVE IS FROM
THE THRONE TOO EACH HIS OWN.
FEAR NOT FOR I HAVE COME TO TEST YOU,
FEAR BEFORE YOUR FACES, THAT YE NOT SIN AGAIN.
I have seen the face of the Lord and felt the love he has for you, now you turn and walk away,
damness be upon you.
